Hace 27 aos surgi en algunos municipios del Estado de Chiapas lo que hoy conocemos como Levantamiento zapatista, movimiento insurgente encabezado por elEjrcito Zapatista de Liberacin Nacional,donde se sumarondiversos colectivos y grupos indgenas. Dicho levantamiento, ha marcado la vida de muchos activistas y polticos de la izquierda de Latino Amrica, pero principalmente, fue el contexto que visibilizo a los pueblos indgenas de Mxico, nunca antes se haba propuesto una mesa de dilogo del gobierno Federal con la participacin de indgenas.
Hoy persiste la lucha por los Derechos y proteccin de los territorios indgenas, evitando con ello, el exterminio de la tierra, de la lengua y de las diversas comunidades y grupos indgenas. La liberacin de los pueblos, inicia por erradicar el cacicazgo poltico enraizado por ms de 500 aos. Ese es el verdadero propsito de algunos dirigentes y asesores que han rescatado algo bueno, de aquellos dilogos promulgados en San Andrs, Chiapas, para nunca ms ser olvidados, ni denigrados.

Para Francisco Lpez Brcenas, la lucha debe ser a travs de la Ley y el Derecho, para ello, la militancia poltica debe ser incorruptible y hacer valer las leyes para el bien de los pueblos. En nuestros das, cada vez ms personajes polticos son de origen indgena, ocupando cargos representativos, con un valor fortalecido sobre lo que es el significado y trabajo de la tierra, la esperanza puesta en ellos es muy grande.
Francisco Lpez Brcenas, recuerda emotivamente su integracin como asesor del Ejrcito Zapatista de Liberacin Nacional (EZLN), situacin que cambi su vida para siempre.
De manera casual o inusual, fue seleccionado gracias a su artculo publicado en la revista Ojarasca, donde abordaba temas como el de las tierras comunales y la reforma al artculo 27 constitucional, y el Convenio 169 de la Organizacin Internacional del Trabajo (OIT) y los tratados internacionales en Mxico.
Con ayuda de voluntarios logr comprar su boleto de avin, para despus, emprender un viaje a lo desconocido e incorporarse como observador, sin conocer a nadie y lejos de querer formar parte de un gran movimiento, ese acontecimiento lo llev a reconocerse as mismo como indgena y hacer valer su asesora, no slo de la comandancia zapatista, sino de muchos pueblos indgenas de Mxico.
Hoy sigue valorando que el movimiento zapatista, siendo un grupo armado, apostar por la poltica y dejar las armas, sin embargo, el Estado pact e incumpli con los acuerdos mnimos, esto en1996 y a la fecha.
La lucha sigue desde varias trincheras y varios escenarios, el actor principal sigue siendo el mismo, los psimos gobiernos y dirigentes polticos que estn al frente del pas.
Brcenas, de origen mixteco es: indgena, campesino, abogado, periodista, escritor, asesor agrario, lder social y autor de 35 libros, con temas sobre; derecho, historia, luchas agrarias y derechos indgena, historia de la mixteca, zapatismo en la mixteca, entre otros. De nio perdi su lengua materna, situacin impuesta por un programa de educacin ya caduco con fines del exterminio tnico. De adulto, recuper todos los valores que representan ser indgena.
Actualmente es servidor del pueblo, siguiendo el ejemplo de sus padres que fueron luchadores sociales. Se sirve tambin como acadmico e investigador en el Colegio de San Luis A. C., en el Estado de San Luis Potos.
La asesora para evitar el despojo impuesto por las mineras, los mega proyectos, la defensa del agua y los bienes materiales, es un trabajo que dista mucho por concluir, y es en ese punto, donde el asesoramiento por parte de Brcenas entra en accin. Asesora Legal y de Derecho a campesinos e indgenas.
